Start with the promise
Claims of high returns with little or no risk are a fundamental warning sign. Legitimate investments involve trade-offs, uncertainty and documented terms. Testimonials, screenshots and account balances displayed inside an unfamiliar platform are not independent proof.
Fraudsters often create urgency, exclusivity or fear of missing out. A deadline designed to prevent verification is itself useful information.
Verify the person and the firm independently
Do not use only the phone number, website or registration link provided by the promoter. Search the relevant regulator’s official database and contact the firm through independently obtained details. Check for slight spelling differences in domains and email addresses.
Registration does not guarantee that an investment is suitable or safe, but a false registration claim can expose an impersonation scam.
- Pause when asked to act immediately or keep the opportunity secret.
- Never send money solely because a social-media account appears popular.
- Verify custody, withdrawal rules, fees and the legal entity receiving funds.
Payment and withdrawal warnings
Requests for cryptocurrency, gift cards or transfers to an individual deserve heightened scrutiny. A demand for an additional tax, insurance payment or release fee before a withdrawal is a common advance-fee pattern.
Stop sending funds when withdrawals are blocked. Preserve messages, transaction records, wallet addresses and website details, then contact the relevant financial institution and authorities promptly.
Build a repeatable routine
Write down the product, issuer, seller, custodian, regulator, fees, liquidity and worst credible loss. Read primary documents and seek a second opinion from someone who is not paid by the seller.
Investor protection begins with time and independent verification. Missing an opportunity is less damaging than transferring money to a scheme that cannot be reversed.
Verification resources
Readers can verify securities filings through SEC EDGAR, investment professionals through FINRA BrokerCheck, and general investor-education material through Investor.gov. Index methodology and fund details should be checked with the relevant index provider and fund issuer.
